Driving to Kennedy Airport
Location: JFK is located on the south shore of Long Island in Queens County. The two major highway systems serving JFK are the north-south Van Wyck Expressway (US RT. 678) and the coastal Belt Parkway (US Rt. 27).
Directions From Midtown Manhattan: JFK is approximately forty-five to sixty minutes from Midtown Manhattan. The best route from midtown is through the Midtown Manhattan Tunnel (toll) onto the Long Island Expressway (495 East). Then follow the LIE to the Van Wyck south (Rt. 678). The Van Wyck south leads right into JFK. Be prepared to spend more time in transit during rush hour.
Directions From Lower Manhattan: JFK is roughly an hour from Lower Manhattan. However, during rush hour, the trip can take up to two hours. If traffic on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Rt. 278) north is moving smoothly, the best way to reach JFK is to cross the East River at the Brooklyn, Williamsburg or Manhattan bridges. Take the BQE to the Long Island Expressway, then follow the LIE down to the Van Wyck south. If traffic is heavy on the BQE north take the BQE south until it becomes the Belt Parkway. Follow the sign on the Belt Parkway to JFK. The route along the South Shore is prettier than the Long Island Expressway and with normal traffic can be almost as fast.
